Flash Storage Applications and Challenges
نویسنده
چکیده
The Solid State Disk (SSD) implemented using NAND flash memory significantly outperforms conventional rotating magnetic disk drive in read performance. However, write performance of flash based SSDs can be up to an order of magnitude slower than its read performance. This fundamental disparity is caused by the fact that flash write operations are immutable and a data sector must be erased before it is rewritten. Furthermore, frequent write operations degrade the lifetime of flash memory over time. In this thesis, various techniques have been proposed to improve write performance of flash memory as well as flash-aware algorithms are designed to avoid frequent update operations.

متن کاملModeling the aging process of flash storage by leveraging semantic I/O
The major advantages of flash memory such as small physical size, no mechanical components, low power consumption, and high performance have made it likely to replace the magnetic disk drives in more and more systems. Many research efforts have been invested in employing flash memory to build high performance and large-scale storage systems for data-intensive applications. However, the enduranc...
متن کاملDepletable Storage Systems
Depletable storage systems use media such as NAND flash that has a limited lifetime, which decreases with more usage. Such systems treat write cycles, in addition to space, as a constrained resource of the system. Depletable storage systems must be equipped to monitor writes, attribute depletion to appropriate applications, and even control the rate of depletion. We outline the new functionalit...

In this paper, we introduce the Flash Research Platform (FRP), a non-volatile memory research platform that targets Solid State Storage (SSS) and NAND Flash research. We are developing the FRP because we believe that solid state storage devices such as Solid State Disks (SSDs) will be a ubiquitous persistent storage medium within 5 years for personal computers and servers. Solid state technolog...
متن کاملEvaluation of A Flash Storage Filesystem on the Cray XE-6
Flash storage and other solid-state storage technologies are increasingly being considered as a way to address the growing gap between computation and I/O. Flash storage has a number of benefits such as good random read performance and lower power consumption. However, it has a number of challenges too, such as high cost and high-overhead for write operations. There are a number of ways Flash c...
